4 Reasons Youre Not Getting Hired

4 Reasons Youre Not Getting Hired4 Reasons Youre Not Getting HiredWhy is it so hard for millennials to find success in their job search? With all of the job search tools in the world today, it would seem that finding a job would just be a computer key away. So why are todays millennials having such a hard time finding their dream jobs? Check out the reasons youre not getting hired below.Four Reasons Youre Not Getting Hired1. Your resume doesnt stand out.Newsflash paper resumes are not outdated. You may think that with all of the online job boards in existence today that you no longer need a resume. Guess what? You are wrong. All job seekers still need a powerful resume that not only communicates your career history and skills, but also positions you as the ideal candidate for the job. Your resume should begin with a strategically written career summary, a highlight of your best achievements, and a career history that is saturated with the most relevant keywords for your position and industry. If you have typos on your resume, consider yourself out of the running immediately. If you are a recent graduate, or even a few years into the professional world, you need to realize that todays resume is not written in a black and white, standard flgel format with Times New Roman font. Seek out a professional to help you build a resume that will market your value and generate interviews.Sign-up for today and post your resume for thousands of companies to find2. You arent prepared for interviews.Your resume may get you the interview, but you still have to get through the interview and show the employer why you deserve the job. As soon as you get called for the interview, you need to start preparing. Research the company. Know its culture, people, products, and mission. Show up on time, be pleasant to the receptionist, and have multiple copies of your resume, as well as any relevant supporting documentation (reference page) to show you are fully prepared for your interview . Dress to impress, but dont overdo it. Leave your potent cologne and dangly jewelry at home- keep the focus on you and your expertise, not the bracelet that keeps bouncing on the hiring managers desk.3. You didnt follow up after the interview.Regardless of how your interview went, you need to send a thank you to the hiring manager you spoke with. And no- a text will not do. This is where you lean on the advice of your predecessors, the gen X crowd, and send a thank you via regular mail. Or, if youve been communicating with the hiring manager through email, zip off a sincere thank-you email, complete with your name in the subject line. Dont just say thank you. Reiterate how your skills make you a good fit for the job. 4. Your social media presence is considered anti-social.While we understand that most millennials are glued to their cell phones and tablets, we will never understand the need to have profanity and less-than-stellar photos and information on your Facebook, Twitter, Vin e, and Instagram posts. Have your parents ever told you once its out there, its out there? They speak the truth. Screenshots and cameras have almost taken the role of delete out of social media dialogue, as people have a way of saving almost anything that is posted. If youre actively seeking employment, clean up your digital dirt and revisit your security parameters on all of your sites. Many employers WILL check you out online before they even call you for an interview.Give them a great resume, kill it at the interview, send a heartfelt thank you after the interview, and dont post anything embarrassing on your social profiles. You will definitely have a great chance of finding the job youve been preparing for and dreaming about.Readers, do you know why youre not getting hired? What have you done to increase your success? 5 Unconventional Ways to Negotiate Your Salary

5 Unconventional Ways to Negotiate Your Salary5 Unconventional Ways to Negotiate Your Salary0While most people know some of the conventional ways to negotiate for salary and benefits (for a refresher, check this out), theres more to negotiating than doing your homework (although thats very important) and practicing. The next time youre up for that big raise or need to negotiate your starting salary at a new gig, consider some of these unconventional ways to up your negotiating game. Here are five unconventional ways to negotiate your salary1. Take an improv class. It might seem silly, but the idea of being prepared for what you cant prepare for will take you a long way, leid only in improv, but in salary negotiations as well. The truth is you can practice every day for hours a day, but the likelihood that your boss will throw a curveball at you during negotiations is high.Taking a few improv classes will help you learn how to think quickly in the moment, which is a great benefit during salary negotiations- and life.2. Consider the negatives.Of course there are 1,001 reasons why you deserve a higher salary, but what are some of the reasons that you might not?Put yourself in your bosss shoes and try to imagine why she might say you actually shouldnt get more money. Write those things down and do your best to fix them (or at least have responses should they come up, like maybe youre halfway through a Photoshop class that will make you even more of a valuable asset, or tout the valuable lesson you learned and practices you put in place that one time you missed an important deadline).Make yourself the most valuable package possible to ensure your superior simply cant say no to your request.3. Pretend you arent in the bro.If you were just hired, remember that your boss hired you for a reason (likely she recognized your incredible skills), and if youve been at your gig for a while then youve had time to prove your worth. In either scenario, it might help going into salary negotiations pretending you arent in an office setting- in fact, if you can request the meeting actually not be in the office, even better Whats more intimidating than staring at your bosss Harvard diploma on the wall while you talk salary, or getting constantly interrupted by incoming emails, ringing phones, and eager assistants?Remember that at the end of the day, your salary negotiation is really just a conversation between you and your boss, so the more relaxed you can make your setting, the better youll feel about it.4. Make a list of your all positivesthen slash it.Your boss is a busy person, and while it would be nice if you could spend hours explaining to her just how awesome of an employee you are, that will likely only irk her (and make her think schwimmbad at time management in her head).Instead, before your negotiations, create a list of all the reasons you know you deserve a higher salary, then boil them down to the top three or four. Stick with reasons that are highly specific (I increased ad revenue by 24 percent in the third quarter) and relevant to the company (When our sales were declining, I drummed up five new clients with a ground campaign that netted the company $2.5 million). It also might help to memorize these 11 words and phrases that are best to avoid during salary negotiations. Hint Im sorry is one of them.5. Skip the nice, round numbers and go for odd ones, instead.According to this LinkedIn piece by negotiation consultant Victoria Pynchon, using odd numbers in your salary ask rather than round ones shows that youve really done your background research and know your exact valueperhaps to the penny. Using sites like PayScale and Salary.com can help you determine what you should be paid for your level of experience and education.

Strategies to Use Social Media in Your Job Search

Strategies to Use Social Media in Your Job Search Strategies to Use Social Media in Your Job Search 1You’re a savvy job seeker. You know that while it’s fun to post your kid’s graduation photos on Facebook, it’s equally as important to keep a professional profile to attract potential hiring managers. But are you using social media in your job search, the right way? It’s estimated that a staggering 92 percent of companies are now utilizing social media as a way of finding their next new hire. Thing is, there seems to be a disconnect in the way recruiters are using social media channels to post job listings and the way that job seekers are finding that info. The study Know the Facts Improve Social Recruiting ROI from iCIMS (infographic below), a web-based employment software company, found that 51 percent of hiring managers were using the social media mega-platform Twitter to let potential employees know of job postings in 140 characters or less. Unfortunately, only a measly one percent of job candidates thought that they would find a job on Twitter. Instead, job seekers thought that the top site to find job postings was LinkedIn, which makes sense. However, only 23 percent of all jobs are posted there. After LinkedIn, people looking for work turned to Facebook and Google+. While the study found that less than 1 percent of companies are posting to the social media platform, jobs there receive nearly four times more views than any other media. Interestingly enough, social media sites Pinterest and Instagram are indeed used by job seekers, but only to gain an understanding of company culture, as opposed to finding a job. Here are some strategies to use social media in your job search. Searching for Job Openings Think about what you would like to gain when you are using social media sites. If you are looking for a job (and less competition), then it would seem that Twitter and Google+ are the way to go. And if you’re looking to find a telecommuting job, Facebook holds the highest number of conversions of people viewing a job posting and then later applying for it. Company Research If you want to find out more about a company, visually driven sites like Instagram and Pinterest would be a better use of your time. Job Scams Social media is quickly becoming one of the best ways to find out about new jobs. Still, you should be wary of job scams, which lurk in almost every social media platform. Be careful as you click and apply for your work-from-home position to ensure that you find a legitimate job that you really want. Readers, do you use social media in your job search? Are you concerned about encountering job scams on these sites? Let us know in the comments section below!

A Brief History of the News Media (Print Journalism)

A Brief History of the News Media (Print Journalism) A Brief History of the News Media (Print Journalism) The backbone of the news media is print journalism. In the early, early days the news media was about the basics: news spread via word of mouth. During the Roman Empire governments transferred written accounts, via people, long distances. Fast forward quite a bit to the invention of the printing press in 1456, which is attributed to Johannes Gutenberg, and you have the beginnings of the mass dispersion of information, i.e. news. Fast forward again, to the 1920s, and we see some of the early developments in news media, as professional journalism standards are created and adopted. What is Journalism? Journalism  is the reporting of news. The basics are the 5 W’s: The Who, What, Where, When and Why of a story. Although print journalists adhere to a somewhat strict style of how they present a story, there are various subjects being reported on. If you peruse any major newspaper, like The Washington Post or The New York Times, you’ll notice all the different sections. A good exercise to get a feel for the different types of news being reported is to check out a weekend edition of the big papers then you’ll notice there is everything from travel to sports to business to arts to culture. Genres in Journalism In addition to the various subjects being reported on in journalism, there are also different ways of transmitting the story. In short, there are different styles or “genres” of journalism. A few examples include investigative journalism (in which a reporter tries to uncover wrongdoing by following a story almost like a detective); and long-form or narrative journalism, also known as “new journalism” (in which stories are longer and almost prose-like). There is also a rift between features, which may cover a person or a trend, and straight-up news stories, which deliver information directly about something that’s happened. Reading Up on Journalism The above is a  pretty  brief rundown of journalism, so it’s a great idea to read up more about the  field if it interests you. To that end here are some books, from straightforward tomes about writing stories to romantic (and sometimes crazy) tales of being a reporter: The Elements of Journalism  by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel: This book is a good primer on the basics of news writing.Associated Press Guide to News Writing: Another good guide to straightforward news reporting. The New New Journalism  by Robert Boynton: A wonderful collection of interviews with some of the leading long-form journalists working today. Especially good since the reporters share details on their work habits and how they got started in the industry. The Mammoth Book of Journalism: 101 Masterpieces from the Finest Writers and Reporters  edited by Jon Lewis: Since I think it’s inherently important to simply read  the great  writing to become a better writer, this collection is a good place to start. In  it,  youll find pieces by some of the luminaries in the field, everyone from Hemingway to Orwell. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas  by Hunter S. Thompson: What do two guys with a car-full of drugs headed out for a bender in Vegas have to do with journalism?  Well, Thompson, whos credited with creating Gonzo Journalism his free-wheeling style was marked by the fact that he inserted himself into his stories is a giant in the field. To boot, the books a very fun read. (Also check out  Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail, in which Thompson chronicles covering the ’72 presidential race…as irreverently and drugged up as ever.) Eats, Shoots Leaves  by Lynne Truss: Even if you’re not planning on being a copy editor, you should have more than passable grammar skills. And this nifty little guide to punctuation makes a seemingly boring topic quite a bit of fun.The Elements of Style  by William Strunk and E.B. White: Since we cant talk grammar and  not  mention the classic book on the topic, I advise checking out this little book; its original standard, originally published in 1957, for the basic elements of writing. The Boys on the Bus  by Timothy Crouse A  much-loved  account of Crouse’s time following the ’72 presidential election as a reporter “on the bus,” i.e. traveling with the candidates (same as Thompson in the  aforementioned  Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail)  Nixon and McGovern.

Lady Boss is the perfect anthem for every millennial boss who wants to be liked

'Lady Boss' is the perfect anthem for every millennial boss who wants to be liked 'Lady Boss' is the perfect anthem for every millennial boss who wants to be liked Rachel Bloom, creator of Golden-Globe-winning “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” has given us musical numbers on how to give good parent and realizing you’re  the villain in your own story. And now in partnership with Vanity Fair, she’s also tackling the anxiety of being a #ladyboss  in a new music video. Through the laughs about Bloom wondering “how much boob is too much boob” to expose to your co-workers, she is also making pointed social commentary about the common tightrope for young female bosses: wanting to be respected while also wanting to be liked.I want you to do what I want / But let me say it in a nice way / All right, I shouldn’t care if you think I’m nice / Do you think I’m a b- -? Well, I don’t give a s- But if I do give a s- , is that internalized misogyny?/ Is it?Truths in the laughsBloom is playing up anxiety that research has shown is well-justified. Harvard Business Review research says that female bosses are penalized by their employees if they don’t demonstrate traditionally feminine  skills like “empathy, support, sensitivity, and self-disclosure.”The rub is that male bosses aren’t seen any worse if they don’t show these empathetic qualities. But for women, it matters.Bloom’s song also tackles female-to-female dynamics in the workplace. After Bloom asks a coworker what her problem is, and Taylor admits she thinks “your success means my failure.” There’s a persistent “Queen Bee” myth - thoroughly debunked - that women are inherently catty and won’t support one another.Adam Grant and Sheryl Sandberg break down the myth  in their New York Times column. They found that when a woman became a CEO, women below in her rank would have a better chance of joining senior management.Studies show that women worry about how they’re perceived  in male-dominated  office settings, with reason. Perceptions of behavior are very different for men and women. As Grant and Sandberg noted: When female executives  promoted diversity in the workplace, they received lower performance ratings because they were seen as trying to game the system.Yet when a male executive would do the same push for diversity, he was rewarded for it with higher performance ratings. That’s why Grant and Sandberg found that when women fear “that their group isn’t valued, some members [will] distance themselves from their own kind.”But in this song, there’s a happy ending. After hashing out their differences through song, Bloom and Taylor come to an understanding.Overall, “#Ladyboss” is a hilariously true look into the mind of being a young female boss who wants to please others while accomplishing her own goals. But there is a limit to wanting to be liked: no matter what doubts Bloom admits she has about leading a team in her power ballad, she does not want to hear her colleague Derrick’s “useful thoughts” about this.

Resume Writing, Interviewing, and Networking Advice

Resume Writing, Interviewing, and Networking Advice Resume Writing, Interviewing, and Networking Advice Resume Writing, Interviewing, and Networking Advice Last Friday afternoon, I felt a fog descending over my brain, and decided it was time to see what kind of information I could immerse myself in using StumbleUpon. It's fun and brainless, but also work-related, so it's an ideal late-Friday afternoon activity. In case you don't know how StumbleUpon works, you check off topics that interest you, and then it randomly finds web sites that fit those topics. One of my topics is blogging, so I soon stumbled a post called 50 Timeless Blogging Tips. As I was skimming them, I spotted three quotations that were perfect for job seekers. 1. Apply this tip to your RESUME WRITING: Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light. Joseph Pulitzer Renowned publisher and founder of the Pulitzer Prize 2. Remember this one as you prepare for JOB INTERVIEWS: You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions. Naguib Mahfouz Egyptian novelist who won the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature 3. Think about this one when you're NETWORKING (especially if you're changing careers): Its almost impossible for people to change alone. We need to join with others who will push us in our thinking and challenge us to do things we didnt believe ourselves capable of. All About INTERPOL Careers and History

All About INTERPOL Careers and History All About INTERPOL Careers and History In a perfect world, when and if a criminal committed a crime, he would conveniently remain within the confines of the jurisdiction where the crime was committed. Then again in a perfect world, there would be no crime, to begin with. Unfortunately for us, our world isnt perfect and, as if dealing with the problem of crime werent difficult enough, law enforcement agencies often find themselves dealing with jurisdictional issues and red tape when trying to investigate crimes and apprehend criminals. For more than 100 years, the international organization now known as INTERPOL has been helping local and national police agencies fight crime around the world. Brief History of INTERPOL INTERPOL was first conceptualized in 1914 when law enforcement and representatives of the justice systems from 24 countries met in Monaco at the first International Criminal Police Congress. Out of that Congress came 12 wishes for the future of law enforcement cooperation around the world. Those 12 wishes expressed the desire for: Improved direct, official contacts between police forces from different countries. The use of postal, telephone and telegram services free of charge for police forces to facilitate arrests. The use of a single uniform language (then French, with the hope that Esperanto would become widespread) to facilitate international communications. That training in forensic science be provided to law and law enforcement students. The increase in the number of law enforcement and police academies within countries. The establishment of an identification system to aid in identifying international criminals. The establishment of an international committee of identification experts to implement the identification system. The establishment of a centralized records repository. The study and establishment of a model extradition treaty to assist in ensuring criminals receive justice. The direct and immediate transmission of extradition requests. That provisional arrests are possible upon notification from the requesting country to the country hosting a fugitive. That countries work together to ensure that when a criminal faces charges in two separate countries, fugitives are extradited expeditiously after a decision is handed down in the first country. The organization that is now known as INTERPOL was officially established as the International Criminal Police Commission in 1923 and was based in Vienna. During World War II, the ICPC fell under NAZI control and most member nations ceased participation, effectively ending the organization. At the end of the war, the agency was rebuilt and relocated to Paris, where it still exists. In 1949 INTERPOL was officially recognized by the United Nations as a nongovernmental entity. Purpose of INTERPOL INERPOL is not an investigative body, but instead is a support organization with the goal of aiding in the investigation of crimes and arrests of criminals worldwide. The organization has established a secure communications system to expedite international cooperation and provide access to international criminal databases such as the United States NCIC. The organization also employs forensic science experts, police training, and crime analysts to provide an international support system for crime fighters.? Working for INTERPOL At the heart of the INTERPOL mission is police cooperation. To that end, INTERPOL employs a seconding program in which representatives from member countries are seconded or placed on loan to INTERPOL for a specified period or tour. Each individual country appoints its representatives from that nations INTERPOL National Central Bureau. In the United States, INTERPOL-Washington is hosted by the U.S. Department of Justice and makes appointments from its various partner agencies, which include the NCIS, the FBI, New York Police Department, the National Sheriffs Association and many other state, local and federal law enforcement agencies. To work for INTERPOL, you must first work for a partner agency and make a request via your chain of command. Benefits of INTERPOL The existence of INTERPOL has improved relations and efficiency of law enforcement around the world since its inception. The cooperation has proven so successful that even officers from countries with no diplomatic relationships can work together through INTERPOL channels to solve crime and capture criminals.

How to leave your comfort zone (for the better)

How to leave your comfort zone (for the better) How to leave your comfort zone (for the better) Your life is waiting at the other side of your comfort  zone.Inspirational quotes encourage you to do something you wouldn’t normally do - you are missing out on life, they tell you. However, crossing the line of your comfort zone is not easy - science shows that experimenting new things makes everyone anxious and worried. The paradox of the FOMO approach is that, rather than neutralizing the fear, it creates more anxiety - those who are afraid of uncertainty get more stressed out. What if you could stretch beyond your comfort zone on your own terms? Not because someone else pushes you to do so.First, you must get rid of the dualistic approach - being comfortable is not the opposite of living dangerously.Meet your comfort zone“Discomfort may be a doorway; don’t run from it.” ?  Joseph DeitchAccording to Merriam-Webster, our comfort zone is the level at which one functions with ease and familiarity. The term was originally coined after the temperature range within which most people feel comfortable, and feel neither cold nor hot (68 to 72 °F or 20 to 22 °C).The comfort zone is a psychological state where one feels safe or at ease and without stress or anxiety.Judith Bardwick, the author of “Danger in the Comfort Zone,” defines the term as “a behavioral state where a person operates in an anxiety-neutral position.” It’s a perceived certainty where we believe we have access to all we need - we feel we have some control. This neutral state is both natural and human - our brain is lazy and leans toward the easiest path. We can continue living on autopilot or embrace discomfort to reap bigger rewards. Simply put: do you want just to live or to thrive?Research has demonstrated that a state of relative comfort creates a consistent and steady performance. However, relative anxiety - a state where our stress level is higher than normal - can maximize your performance. Conversely, too much anxiety drops your productivity off.The challenge is findin g what Robert Yerkes and John Dodson called “Optimal Anxiety” - the sweet-spot between arousal and performance. The Hebbian version of the Yerkesâ€"Dodson lawBeing comfortably numb“Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me Is there anyone at home?” -  Pink FloydSometimes life hurts. To avoid suffering, we build a wall around ourselves.Comfortably Numb is a Pink Floyd’s song from the album “The Wall.” Pink, the character from the namesake movie, is burnt out - he creates a bubble to protect himself from the outside. This wall seems to alleviate the pain, but doesn’t allow Pink to overcome the cause of his suffering.Having a comfort zone is not a problem - building a wall around it makes us feel numb. When we stop stretching beyond our own limits, we stop learning and growing. That’s the danger of staying in the comfort zone all the time - you end up bored and unchallenged.Start by getting rid of the ‘comfortable is safe; uncomfortable is dangerous’ dualism. You don’t have to put your life at risk to leave your comfort zone. There are actually three, not two, zones where you can live. The opposite of the Comfort Zone is the Danger space - personal growth happens in between: the Learnin g Zone.Stretching beyond your comfort zone is not about being courageous, but curious.Only by crossing the line of certainty and familiarity, you can grow. That’s what our current education and parenting model got wrong - by wrapping up kids in bubble plastic, they seeded fear and anxiety. We need to recover the value of ‘no pain, no gain,” as I explained here.If you’ve ever pushed yourself to get to the next level in sports, creativity or learning new skills, you know that feeling - pain is a signal of learning. We all struggle to do something for the first time. We all find it difficult to push ourselves harder and harder.Pain is the voice of resistance - when you stop listening to it, you can focus on making progress.Your brain, just like your body, needs training. Neurons that are weak, unused, or that don’t fit the job are pruned. Neurons that are exercised get stronger and develop more connections. When you start reaching a point where your inner voice tells you “ stop,” that’s when you need to keep going.Every time I go biking, I set a goal. When I get halfway through the miles I decided to ride, my brain sends me a signal telling me to turn around. However, I challenge its laziness - I keep riding for a couple more miles. That’s how I keep pushing myself to bike more.Leaving your comfort zone is not as dangerous as you might think - explore the Learning Zone, not the Danger Zone. Also, though it sounds counterintuitive, there are significant dangers that lurk in the Comfort Zone. If you get too comfortable, you can start to hold yourself back. Also, our comfort zones tend to shrink as we get older.John F. Kennedy said: “There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less than the long-range risks of comfortable inaction.”How to stretch your mind and grow“The further you get away from yourself, the more challenging it is. Not to be in your comfort zone is great fun.” ?  Benedict Cumberbatch1. Find Balance Living outside of your comfort zone all the time can be as harmful as staying put. Training your mind, like in sports, requires not just effort, but to regulate your pace.Enjoying life is a balancing act between familiar and unfamiliar things. Some people will label you as comfortable if you don’t want to skydive. However, that’s your call. Those who approach life as “Gamblers” are driven by the thrill of the chase - by desperately avoiding comfort they end living in the Danger, not Learning, Zone.2. Alternate Your Dynamics To gain better results, mix the intensity and frequency of the challenges. If you run, let’s say 10 miles at the same average speed every day, you are not making real progress. It’s not that continually exercising is wrong, but always running at a steady pace improves your endurance, not your speed.Running intervals is the best way to increase your overall speed - run at speeds faster than you would race at for small periods of time.3. Become Your Own Benchmark What’s your baseline? How do you deal with risk and uncertainty? What most extremists miss is that everyone’s comfort zone is different - you can’t apply a one-size-fits-all approach. Those who are familiar with my line of work and writing, know that I’m always challenging myself and those around me. However, my experience both as a former CEO and now coaching hundreds of teams has taught me a great lesson: you can’t help others applying your standard. How much are you willing to stretch beyond their comfort zone? Don’t push yourself too hard.4. Incremental Progression Changes Your Shape Expanding your comfort zone requires multiple progressions to achieve long-lasting results.Think of your comfort zone as a rubber band. If you stretch it all of a sudden, you might be deceived by its apparent larger shape. Once you let go of the rubber band, not only it will go back to its original form, but it can actually hit you.The Ten Percent Advantage is an approach to create everyday progress: focusing on small 10% increments will move you forward. The most important part: it will help you build the momentum to turn leaving your comfort zone into a habit, not a one-off.5.
